Under what circumstances will the double glass reactor explode?

Under what circumstances will the double glass reactor explode?

A double glass reactor is a commonly used reaction vessel in laboratories. It is made of two layers of glass, inside and outside, with a vacuum in the center for good insulation, and is mainly used for chemical reactions that require precise temperature control. Although it was originally designed to safely contain and conduct chemical experiments, it is true that in some cases, if not used properly, it can explode and cause a safety incident. Here are some of the situations that can lead to an explosion in a double glass reactor:

Excessive pressure:If the pressure inside the reactor is too high, exceeding its designed tolerance limit, it may lead to an explosion.

Chemical reaction out of control:If the chemical reaction inside the reactor is out of control and produces a large amount of gas, it is too late to release it through the pressure relief device. This will cause the internal pressure to rise sharply, thus triggering an explosion.

Mechanical damage:If the reactor has manufacturing defects or suffers from mechanical damage during use, such as impact, drop, etc., it may weaken its structural strength, resulting in rupture during use.

Thermal shock:Rapid temperature changes, such as injecting coolant into a reactor at high temperatures, may cause the glass material to rupture due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Corrosion:If the reactor comes into contact with highly corrosive chemicals that have a corrosive effect on the glass, this may weaken the glass in the long term and increase the risk of explosion.

Operational errors:Operators failing to comply with operating procedures, such as failing to properly relieve pressure, failing to check the integrity of the equipment, and incorrectly estimating the reaction conditions, may lead to safety accidents.

Poor maintenance:due to instrumentation receiver leakage, valve sealing is not tight, etc. Caused by flammable gas leakage in the operation of the equipment, or failure to clean up the deposits in a timely manner (such as yellow phosphorus, brick mud, carbon deposits)makes the pipeline clogging, resulting in the rise of the vacuum of the equipment, the air enters the gas pipe through the water seal, and the formation of an explosive mixture within the equipment, or at high temperatures caused by spontaneous combustion of carbon deposits and explosions.

In order to prevent the explosion of double glass reactor, it should be:

1. Ensure that the equipment is of satisfactory quality and that it is regularly inspected and maintained.

2. Check the equipment for cracks, damages or other defects before use.

3. Strictly follow the operating procedures and reasonably predict and control the reaction conditions.

4. Closely monitor the temperature and pressure during the reaction to ensure that safety limits are not exceeded.

5. Equip the reactor with appropriate pressure relief devices to prevent overpressurization.

6. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment(PPE)when performing chemical reactions.

Safety is no small matter, and laboratory staff should always be vigilant in following safety procedures to ensure safe experiments.
